Sophal Lackey, MA

Certified Workforce Engagement Specialist

Meet Sophal Lackey, MA, Independent Consultant, and Certified Workforce Engagement Specialist.

From Cambodian War Refugee to Student of Leadership

Sophal, the youngest of six children, was born in a Cambodian concentration camp. Her life is a story of resilience, inspiration, and service.

As a young child, she immigrated to the US with her family. Freed from devastation of war and now bound to freedom’s opportunities, Sophal was able to grasp the English language with ease. She soon became a translator for her father, a community leader and minister for other Cambodian families. This is where, at an early age, Sophal developed her exceptional ability to pay attention, listen, and engage. Shadowing her father and watching him lead allowed her to experience and learn first-hand the dynamics and challenges of leadership.

From Summer Intern to Director of Organizational Development

Sophal's ability to connect with people and inspire them is what makes her an exceptional trainer and consultant. With more than a decade of service with Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning, Sophal rose from summer intern, to valued employee, to creating her dream job as Director of Organizational Development. There, she directed the agency’s strategic planning, performance measures, customer service, and leadership development.

From Personal Pain to Renewed Perspective

While in graduate school, Sophal discovered the little ache in her chest was breast cancer. Distressed but not distraught, she turned her pain into poetry and purpose. While undergoing treatment, she wrote poems and research papers, eventually finishing her studies. She graduated with honors with a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Shorter College in 2008.

Her road to healing included sharing her personal experience with other young women with breast cancer. Empowerment, empathy, and laughter were the themes of these meetings. Like a rough gem, each struggle and tumble of life polished and revealed what was inside her.

Sophal's life and work continue to sparkle with the birth of her daughter a few years ago and the creation of her consulting business. She calls beautiful Georgia her home. An unashamed nature nut, she loves to enjoy the outdoors with her husband, young daughter, and dog.

Sophal looks forward to greeting you with a smile, ready to listen, connect, share and help.
